Christopher Samuel-Idowu

Christopher Samuel Idowu (b.1995) is a visual artist from the coastal town of Badagry, Nigeria. Idowu studied at the Yaba College of Technology where he majored in painting and is now based in Lagos State, where he works as a studio artist. Within his work he uses different mediums which include conte crayon, charcoal, watercolour, acrylics, and oil. Throughout his work he enjoys experimenting with material explorations, and gradually immersing himself into different art forms.

Being raised on a mission accounts for his inclusion of spiritual iconography and imagery in Idowu’s paintings. The colours, residual architecture and selected sitters in his compositions reference the past and present landscapes of Badagry. His works explore time, history, personal experiences, memory, human connection and spirituality through portraiture. Visually, he documents both earthly and ethereal moments by using familiar human subjects as his focus. Some of his influences are Anselm Kiefer, Ibrahim Mahama, Odun Orimolade, and Raji Mohammed.
